The next step is a GIS analyst which normally involves some database design, more complex mapping etc. The icing on the cake is a GIS developer role whereby you are essentially a programmer.Bear in mind that GIS work is not particularly well paid unless you are at developer level whereby it's not GIS or geography but rather full on programming. Also it has the potential to be soul destroying as you are often sat infront of a computer for 50 hours a week with little to no human interaction...

Hi all. I worked in GIS for over 5 years. In the UK you really need a degree in Geography or a degree in GIS. Most geography degrees will offer some optional GIS courses during study. From there you just need to get a foot in the door by finding an entry level position which although usually mind numbing, will effectively teach you to use basic functions of either or both of the industry standard software packages (Esri or MapInfo).

@MsJanjoon hi, i am a geography /GIS option. GIS is under geography dept.In my school, it is under college of geosciences.Geospatial science too is another option. both majors teaches GIS.I will be taking my first GIS class next semester. I have used ESRI arcmap and adobe illustrator for some of my classesand they are amazing!
